The Foundation F2 sits at the top of MartinLogan's Motion Foundation range, the flagship tower built for listeners who want the most dynamic, full-range performance the series can deliver. Where the smaller F1 is about fitting a real floorstander into a modest room, the F2 is about scale: bigger woofers, deeper bass and the headroom to fill a larger space with effortless, room-filling sound. Finished in Satin White with silver trim, it's a genuine statement piece as much as a serious loudspeaker.
At the top of the cabinet is the Gen2 Obsidian Folded Motion Tweeter S, the technology MartinLogan built its name on. Rather than a conventional dome, it uses a pleated thin-film diaphragm that holds a large radiating area in a tiny, almost weightless panel. Because it barely has to move to produce sound, it starts and stops with a speed and low distortion an ordinary tweeter can't match, giving the F2 the open, finely detailed treble that makes voices and instruments sound startlingly real. A Folded Motion Waveguide aligns the output of the tweeter and midrange so they integrate seamlessly, and it spreads detail evenly across the room while taming the reflections that otherwise smear the sound.
The F2 is a true three-way speaker, and that's where it pulls ahead of the rest of the range. A dedicated 5.5" aluminium midrange driver handles vocals and instruments in its own sealed chamber, kept clear of any interference from the bass, so the midband stays clean and natural. Beneath it sit three 6.5" aluminium woofers, larger than the F1's 5.5" drivers, moving considerably more air to reach down to 36Hz. That extra cone area is what gives the F2 its weight and authority, delivering bass that's deep and physical yet stays tight and controlled thanks to the stiff, low-mass aluminium cones. For most music it's genuinely full-range, and it still partners well with a subwoofer when you want the last bit of cinema rumble.
MartinLogan voices its towers to take advantage of the floor itself, with precise woofer placement and crossover tuning that produce a fuller, more natural sound in a real listening room rather than just on a test bench. The bass-reflex MDF cabinet with rear-firing ports is built to stay inert so the drivers do the work without the box adding its own colouration.
A sensitivity of 92dB makes the F2 efficient enough to play loud without demanding a huge amplifier, and it's even a sensible match for lower-powered valve amps. That said, its 4-ohm impedance dips low enough that it's happiest with a quality integrated amplifier or a receiver genuinely rated to drive 4-ohm loads, rather than an entry-level unit. Connection is via solid five-way binding posts. A nice touch is the secure-lock grille system: the grilles clip firmly in place and can be left on, taken off, or even rotated to change the run of the fabric's grain, so you can fine-tune the look to suit the room.
Voiced to match the Foundation C1 centre and the B1 and B2 bookshelves, the F2 makes a commanding front pair for a high-performance stereo setup or the anchor of a full home cinema. It is the most capable expression of what the Motion Foundation range can do.
