JVC DLA-NZ500 4K D-ILA Laser Home Cinema Projector

The JVC DLA-NZ500 is the entry point into JVC's current native 4K laser projector range, but don't let the "entry-level" tag fool you. It uses the same redesigned compact chassis as the NZ700, the same BLU-Escent laser engine, and the same Gen 2 Frame Adapt HDR processing that's earned JVC its reputation for class-leading dynamic tone mapping. For a lot of home theatre buyers it's the most sensible projector in the range, with reviewers consistently calling it one of the best-performing sub-£6,000 projectors on the market.

Three of JVC's 0.69-inch native 4K D-ILA devices sit at the core, paired with the BLU-Escent laser light source. The result is 2,000 lumens of brightness, a 40,000:1 native contrast ratio, and effectively infinite dynamic contrast thanks to laser dimming. Black levels are genuinely cinematic, and shadow detail is among the best in this price bracket. Films like Gravity, Dune or The Batman, with their long dark sequences, are exactly where this projector shines.

Native 4K, not pixel-shifted

Each of the three D-ILA chips delivers a full 4096 x 2160 image, so what you see on screen is true native 4K, not Full HD with pixel shifting. JVC has refined the chipset with improved liquid crystal alignment and pixel flatness, which translates to better contrast and noticeably more uniform brightness across the screen. The new Deep Black Tone Control pulls extra detail out of dark scenes too, giving you depth and gradation that lesser projectors just can't match.

Gen 2 Frame Adapt HDR

HDR support covers HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG, with JVC's second-generation Frame Adapt HDR analysing content frame-by-frame or scene-by-scene and applying tone mapping in real time. The projector also reads DML metadata alongside MaxCLL and MaxFALL values, so it knows how the content was mastered and adjusts dynamic range accordingly. In practice this is one of the NZ500's standout features and a big part of why it punches well above its price point on HDR content.

There's also a new Vivid picture mode for SDR content, which adds saturation and richness to animation, broadcast and streaming material without sacrificing accuracy.

Compact, well-designed and quiet

The new chassis is around 35% smaller than the older NZ7, making it one of the most compact native 4K projectors you can buy. At 14.6kg it's also a lot easier to install than its predecessors, often a one-person job. Heat exhaust now vents from the rear rather than the front, which keeps warm air away from the viewer and the screen and makes installations cleaner.

Motorised 1.6x zoom lens

The 80mm all-glass lens uses 15 elements in 11 groups and delivers full native 4K resolution corner to corner. Zoom, focus and lens shift are all fully motorised, with 1.6x zoom, ±70% vertical shift and ±28% horizontal shift. Five lens memory presets make it easy to switch between aspect ratios if you've got a cinemascope screen, and the system can also blank the unused portion of the image with a press of a button. That's a luxury feature usually reserved for much more expensive projectors.

Calibration and modes

ISF C3 certified, with auto-calibration via an optional optical sensor and a full 6-axis colour management system. Filmmaker Mode, Natural, Cinema, Vivid and Frame Adapt HDR modes are all included, along with eight installation memory positions and four user-customisable picture profiles. There's also USB backup so you can save all your settings to a flash drive.

The DLA-NZ500 is the projector to go for if you want JVC's signature contrast, black levels and HDR tone mapping without paying the premium for the higher-end models. It's a properly cinematic projector that delivers far more performance than its price tag suggests.
