The Foundation F1 is for the listener who wants the scale and full-range sound of a floorstander but doesn't have the room, or the inclination, for a large tower. It's the more compact of MartinLogan's two Motion Foundation floorstanders, with a slimmer footprint than the F2, yet it still packs a three-way driver array and four aluminium cones into the cabinet. The result is a genuinely full-bodied sound from a speaker that tucks neatly into a modestly sized lounge, finished here in Satin White with silver trim to suit lighter, contemporary rooms.
As with every Foundation model, the centrepiece is the Gen2 Obsidian Folded Motion Tweeter S. Instead of a conventional dome, it uses a pleated thin-film diaphragm that holds a large radiating surface in a tiny, near-weightless panel. Because it barely needs to move to make sound, it responds with a speed and low distortion an ordinary tweeter can't reach, which is the source of the open, finely detailed treble MartinLogan is known for. Paired with the Folded Motion Waveguide, it spreads that detail evenly across the room and avoids the early reflections that smear and dull the sound, so the F1 stays clean and precise across a wide seating area rather than just one sweet spot.
What separates a floorstander from a bookshelf is how it splits the work, and the F1 is a proper three-way speaker. A dedicated 5.5" aluminium midrange driver handles vocals and instruments in their own sealed chamber, free from interference from the bass, which keeps the midband clear and natural. Below it, three 5.5" aluminium woofers handle the low frequencies, moving enough air to reach down to 41Hz with real authority. The stiff, low-mass aluminium cones start and stop quickly, so bass stays tight and tuneful rather than boomy, and for most music you won't feel the need for a subwoofer at all.
At just over a metre tall and a slim 21cm wide, the F1 stands confidently without dominating a room. The rear-ported cabinet sits on its own feet for stability, and connection is via solid five-way binding posts. With a sensitivity of 92dB and a recommended amplifier range of 15 to 200 watts, it's an efficient, flexible partner that sings with quality integrated amps and AV receivers alike, though its 4-ohm impedance rewards a receiver or amplifier that's comfortable driving lower impedances.
Built around MartinLogan's 40 years of design experience and its signature thin-film performance, the F1 works beautifully as a stereo pair for music or as the front left and right of a home cinema. Voiced to match the Foundation C1 centre and the B1 and B2 bookshelves, it gives you a tonally consistent front stage to build a complete high-performance system around.
