The Foundation B1 is the speaker that proves you don't need a tall floorstander or a five-figure budget to get a real taste of MartinLogan's signature sound. It's the most compact model in the Motion Foundation range, and it takes the thin-film tweeter technology the brand built its reputation on and brings it down to a price and a footprint that make sense for ordinary rooms. The result is a small bookshelf speaker that sounds far bigger and far more refined than its size suggests, finished here in a clean Satin White that suits modern, light interiors.
The heart of the B1 is the Gen2 Obsidian Folded Motion Tweeter S. Instead of a conventional dome, it uses a pleated thin-film diaphragm that packs a large radiating surface into a tiny, lightweight panel. Because that panel barely has to move to produce sound, it responds with a speed and precision a normal tweeter struggles to match, which is exactly why MartinLogan speakers are known for their airy, detailed treble. On the B1 it reproduces fine texture in voices, strings and cymbals with a clarity that genuinely surprises people at this price.
Paired with the tweeter is a Folded Motion Waveguide that shapes how the high frequencies spread into the room. It widens and evens out the sweet spot so the detail holds up across a broader seating area, and it reduces the early reflections off nearby surfaces that can smear and dull the sound. In practice that means the B1 sounds clean and focused without demanding that you sit in one perfect chair to hear it at its best.
Handling the midrange and bass is a 5.5" aluminium cone driver built on a cast aluminium basket with a non-resonant sealed chamber. The stiff aluminium cone resists flexing, so notes stay clear and controlled rather than soft or muddy, and the construction is trickle-down engineering from MartinLogan's higher Motion and Motion XT ranges. The B1 reaches down to 48Hz, which is plenty for music in a smaller room, and it pairs beautifully with a subwoofer when you want full home-cinema weight underneath it.
With a sensitivity of 89dB and a recommended amplifier range of 15 to 100 watts, the B1 is happy with modest integrated amplifiers and AV receivers alike, so you don't need exotic electronics to get the best from it. Connection is via quality five-way binding posts. For a tidy, stable setup the cabinet is threaded to work with MartinLogan's STAND25 stands, and the compact size means it sits comfortably on a shelf, sideboard or desk where a larger speaker simply wouldn't fit.
Sold individually so you can configure exactly the system you need, the B1 works as a refined stereo pair in a study or second room, as rear channels in a larger MartinLogan surround setup, or as the starting point for a hi-fi system you grow over time. It is, as the name suggests, a foundation, and a remarkably musical one.
