JVC DLA-NZ700 4K D-ILA Laser Home Cinema Projector

The JVC DLA-NZ700 sits in a really interesting spot in the D-ILA range. It uses the same 3rd-generation 4K D-ILA chipset as the flagship NZ800 and NZ900, but in a completely redesigned, more compact body that's around 35% smaller than the previous NZ7. For a lot of buyers it's arguably the sweet spot of the new lineup, delivering proper reference-grade image quality at a price that's a meaningful step down from the higher-end models.

Three of JVC's 0.69-inch native 4K D-ILA devices sit at the heart of the projector, paired with the BLU-Escent laser light source. That gives you 2,300 lumens of brightness, an 80,000:1 native contrast ratio, and the deep, inky blacks JVC is known for. Brightness per watt is around double that of the original Z1 from 2017, so it's also more efficient than older laser projectors, with a 20,000-hour lifespan.

Native 4K with serious contrast

This is a true native 4K projector, not a pixel-shifted Full HD image. Each of the three D-ILA chips delivers a full 4096 x 2160 resolution, and the new chipset has improved liquid crystal alignment and pixel flatness for better contrast and screen uniformity. The result is genuinely cinematic, with the kind of natural film-like quality that's hard to get from DLP or LCD rivals.

The newly added Deep Black Tone Control refines dark-area gradation further, pulling out shadow detail that lesser projectors just smother.

Gen 2 Frame Adapt HDR

HDR support covers HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG. Gen 2 Frame Adapt HDR analyses each scene or frame in real time and applies tone mapping on the fly, which makes a noticeable difference with content that varies a lot in brightness. The projector also reads DML (Display Mastering Luminance) metadata alongside MaxCLL and MaxFALL values, so it knows exactly how the content was graded and adjusts accordingly. In practice, HDR images look properly punchy without the blown-out highlights or crushed blacks you sometimes get with auto tone mapping.

For SDR content there's also a new Vivid mode that adds saturation and pop to animation, streaming and general TV viewing without losing accuracy.

Redesigned lens, full motorised setup

The new 80mm all-glass lens uses 15 elements in 11 groups and delivers full native 4K resolution corner to corner. Zoom, focus and lens shift are all motorised, with 1.6x zoom, ±70% vertical shift and ±28% horizontal shift. You also get 5 lens memory positions, which makes it easy to switch between aspect ratios if you've got a wide cinemascope screen.

Heat exhaust now vents from the rear rather than the sides, which means installations are tidier and there's no hot air drifting across the image.

Connectivity and gaming

The NZ700 has two HDMI 2.0 inputs with 32Gbps bandwidth, supporting 4K at up to 60Hz, HDCP 2.3 and full HDR pass-through. It's worth noting that unlike the NZ800 and NZ900, this model doesn't support 4K 120Hz, so dedicated gamers chasing the highest refresh rates on PS5 Pro or high-end PC may want to look at the NZ800 instead. For movie watchers and casual gaming though, it's more than enough.

Calibration, modes and installation

ISF C3 certified, with auto-calibration via an optional optical sensor and a full 6-axis colour management system. Filmmaker Mode is included, along with eight installation memory positions for storing different setups by source, screen or aspect ratio. The DCI-P3 Cinema Filter delivers around 98% of the DCI-P3 colour gamut for properly cinematic colour reproduction.

In Eco mode the projector runs at just 23dB, which is quiet enough that you forget it's there once a film starts.

The DLA-NZ700 isn't trying to be the flashiest projector on the market. What it is, though, is one of the most thoroughly cinematic 4K projectors at this price point, and the kind of upgrade that genuinely transforms a serious home theatre setup.
