A dedicated cinema should be planned by the homeowner, interior designer and cinema specialist before the building work starts. That gives the screen, seating, lighting, finishes and sound one proper plan instead of a series of compromises after the room is finished.
Acoustic panels control reflections. The front speakers can sit behind an acoustically transparent screen, while surrounds and height speakers disappear behind fabric wall panels. The screen and room design stay in view without a collection of speaker boxes around them.

Before comparing equipment
Why is choosing a home cinema system such a headache?
Home cinema audio looks simple while it is still a row of boxes online. The headache starts when those boxes have to fit around a sofa, doors, power points, neighbours and a television. An Atmos logo does not settle any of that.
Start with the room, not the equipment
Speakers and receivers are easy to compare because the numbers line up neatly. Rooms refuse to cooperate. A large open lounge with tiled floors behaves very differently from a carpeted room with curtains and a low ceiling, even when both use the same equipment.
Fix the main seating position first because the speaker angles, screen size and calibration all work from that point. Then mark the doors, windows, open passages, wall construction and power points. Decide how much visible cable the household will accept. If the sofa sits against the back wall, a 7.1 layout may add two boxes without producing useful rear separation. A well-positioned 5.1 system will usually make more sense.
Bass needs its own plan. A subwoofer interacts with the room dimensions, so an expensive model in the wrong position can sound uneven or overbearing. Two smaller subwoofers may smooth the bass across several seats, but they cost more and occupy more floor space. In a flat or shared home, isolation, sensible levels and a useful night mode can matter more than maximum output.
The Atmos question
How does virtual Dolby Atmos work?
Virtual Dolby Atmos uses digital signal processing to create directional cues from fewer physical speakers. By changing timing, level and frequency response, the system can make some sounds appear wider or higher than the soundbar. Headphones use a related process called a head-related transfer function, which models the timing and tonal changes created by your ears, head and torso.
Do not confuse virtual Atmos with upward-firing Atmos. Upward-firing drivers carry real height channels and aim them at the ceiling. The reflected sound can create a convincing layer above the listener, but the result still depends on the room. A high, angled, absorbent or uneven ceiling makes that reflection less predictable.

DSP creates phantom surround and height cues. The system stays compact, although the effect is usually strongest around the main seat and cannot place sound as precisely as separate speakers.

Dedicated drivers bounce the height channels off the ceiling. A flat, reflective ceiling between roughly 2.3 and 4.3 metres gives them the best chance of working properly.

Ceiling speakers or correctly aimed high-mounted speakers send height information towards the seats. Installation takes more work, but the result is more predictable across the listening area.
Formats and labels
What is the difference between Dolby, DTS and THX?
The front of an AVR mixes speaker layouts, audio codecs, immersive formats and certification marks in one line of logos. They describe different parts of the job, which is why comparing them as rival formats quickly becomes confusing.
5.1 and 7.1Speaker layout
The first number counts the ear-level channels. The second counts subwoofer or low-frequency effects channels. A 5.1 system has left, centre, right, two surrounds and a subwoofer channel. A 7.1 system adds two rear surrounds.
5.1.2 and 7.1.4Atmos layout
The third number counts height channels. A 5.1.4 system keeps the normal five-channel surround bed and adds four speakers above, high on the walls or in reflected upward-firing positions.
Dolby Digital, Plus and TrueHDDelivery codecs
Dolby Digital and Dolby Digital Plus use lossy compression. Digital Plus is common on streaming services and can carry Atmos information. Dolby TrueHD is lossless and commonly found on Blu-ray and Ultra HD Blu-ray. It can carry Atmos too.
Dolby AtmosSpatial audio
Atmos combines a channel-based bed with audio objects and positional metadata. Your AVR or soundbar renders that information for the speakers that are actually available in your room.
DTS, DTS-HD MA and DTS:XAlternative family
DTS Digital Surround and DTS-HD Master Audio cover conventional channel-based playback, with DTS-HD MA providing lossless delivery. DTS:X adds object-based immersive audio and can remap a mix to different speaker arrangements.
THXCertification
THX is not a soundtrack codec. It began as a cinema performance standard and certifies rooms or equipment against playback targets. A THX Certified receiver can still decode Dolby and DTS soundtracks because the labels describe different jobs.
A short history lesson
How did surround sound develop?
Surround sound developed through a series of film releases and playback standards. Cinemas added channels, digital formats made those channels discrete, and Atmos later let mixers describe a sound by its position instead of tying it to one speaker.
Fantasia and Fantasound
Disney's roadshow system used multichannel stereophonic sound to move music through specially equipped cinemas. The hardware was expensive and appeared in relatively few venues.
Dolby Stereo gains surround
A Star Is Born used a four-channel Dolby Stereo presentation with left, centre, right and a surround channel encoded onto the optical print.
Star Wars drives upgrades
The film's success gave cinemas a commercial reason to improve playback. Ben Burtt's sound design made the upgraded system easy for an audience to hear.
THX sets a playback standard
THX launched with Return of the Jedi. Its purpose was consistency: quieter rooms, controlled acoustics and systems capable of reproducing the studio mix properly.
Dolby Digital reaches cinemas
Batman Returns was the first feature released in Dolby Digital, helping establish discrete digital 5.1 sound for theatrical playback.
DTS launches with Jurassic Park
The film used DTS 5.1 audio stored on CD-ROM and synchronised to the picture with timecode, establishing another major digital surround format.
Brave introduces Atmos
Dolby Atmos added overhead speakers and audio objects with positional metadata. The soundtrack could now describe where a sound belonged in three-dimensional space.
From set to final mix
How is a film mixed for surround sound and Atmos?
A film is not simply recorded in Atmos on set. The location team concentrates on clean dialogue, room tone and usable effects. Editors, Foley artists, sound designers and mixers build the rest after the picture has been assembled.

Record clean source sound
The production mixer captures dialogue and room tone while the camera is rolling. Actors may later replace difficult lines with ADR, recorded in sync with the edited picture.

Build the soundtrack
Dialogue editors clean and assemble performances. Foley artists perform footsteps, clothing and object movement. Sound designers add vehicles, weather, impacts and imagined sounds, while the score arrives as its own set of stems.

Place and balance
On the mix stage, dialogue, music, ambience and broad effects can live in a multichannel bed. Specific sounds can become objects with coordinates and movement. A helicopter can travel over the audience without being tied to one fixed ceiling speaker.

Render the delivery mix
The Atmos Renderer combines the audio with its positional metadata and maps it to the playback layout. That lets the mix scale across cinema and home systems. The team can also create conventional 5.1 and 7.1 versions.
Measure every angle from the centre seat of the main sofa. Calibration can refine a sensible layout, but it cannot fix a speaker blocked by furniture or placed on the wrong side of the room.
